Voices of the Poor

    During the 1990's the World Bank asked more than 60,000 poor people from sixty low-income countries the simple question: "what is poverty?"  They published the results in three volumes entitled "Voices of the poor". Whilst in their answers the poor mentioned the lack of material things they also used words such as : shame, inferiority, hopelessness, powerlessness and an inability to change their own circumstances (source: "When Helping Hurts" by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert). One of the things that we have witnessed in poor communities is the desperate lack of models of success. All too frequently the only models of success that young people have seen are when neighbours return from Northern Europe having been begging on the streets or working illegally for a few months.
